Sedation – Are you nervous?

Have you been putting off going to the dentist for years?

Is the thought of treatment just too much for you? Are you suffering episodes of pain but just putting up with it?  Then perhaps IV sedation is for you…

Dr. Wilkins has been a member of SAAD (Society of Advanced Anaesthesia in Dentistry) since 1992. He provides intravenous sedation for patients with dental anxiety.

Sedation dentistry is not for everyone. In fact, many of our patients with some dental anxiety find they don’t need sedation in our practice. These patients often tell us that our caring, gentle approach provides them with a relaxing, pleasant experience even without sedation. But if you find the thought of your treatment is just too much then the choice is really yours.

Advantages of IV Sedation  IV sedation is an excellent method of treatment for patients who have any of the following concerns:

  • Dental Anxiety
  • Difficulty Getting Numb
  • Extensive Dental Needs
  • Involved procedures (wisdom teeth)

IV sedation allows Dr. Wilkins to specifically monitor and balance the amount of medication provided to the patient at any given moment.

It is our aim that once the IV sedation treatment is done we try to rehabilitate you into having your treatment done without iv sedation. This is done by regular contact and maintenance program that will gain your confidence for the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is IV Sedation?
A. Intravenous (or IV) sedation is an excellent method of treatment for patients who have severe dental anxiety or extensive dental needs.

Q. How does it work?
A. During IV sedation, the patient is administered medication intravenously. This medication ( similar to a sleeping pill) induces a drowsy and relaxed feeling, enabling the patient to remain completely calm and sedated throughout their treatment.

Q. Will I go to sleep?
A. Throughout the treatment, the patient’s vital signs are monitored. Although patients are not completely unconscious, many patients sleep through their dental appointment. Few patients have any memory of their treatment. Patients who have IV sedation must have a friend or family member bring them to the dental practice and return them home.
